Instructions  

This visual key displays two or more photos that represent a "concept" of a specimen.  Therefore, it is best not to look for an exact match to your leaf, but rather which whole photograph gives you the best overall "idea".  

Begin by clicking on the number above the set of oak leaves that most closely resembles your sample.

Again, click the number that best fits your specimen

Some pages may contain additional photos to help you with you identification.  To access these pictures,   
click on the links below the photograph and a separate window will open.

To see a picture of the acorn, you would select "Acorn" below the photo.




Once you have reached an identification you may click on the species name to see more information on that specimen.
This will open a separate window giving you more photographs and information about that particular species.



If at any point, you feel you have made a mistake, click the BACK button in your browser to navigate to the previous page or click the BACK TO START link to go to the beginning of the key.

Additional tips:
- Look at multiple leaves from your unknown sample
- If available, look at the whole tree: bark, buds, leaves, etc.
- Color can sometimes be helpful, but don't rely on it alone.
