Audio description of "Mother and Daughter"

Transcription

You are beneath a 8 foot x 10 foot vinyl print, based on an original artwork dedicated to Pam Harvey by the artist Johnathan Debord titled “Mother and Daughter.”
“Mother and Daughter,” is an acrylic painting on 8x10 inch paper. I will now describe the painting from the inside and work my way out.
In the middle of the painting there are two figures in black silhouette standing on black silhouette ground. The figures occupy the center of the composition. The figure to the left is in the shape of a slim figured woman, her arms down by her side. Her right hand is connected to the smaller figure, about half the woman’s height. The smaller figure is the shape of a slender young girl wearing a skirt that stops slightly above the girl's knees.
Surrounding the figures, starting inside, is a light purple-pink color in the shape of a circle. The color is closer to white than it is to purple. As we get closer to the edge of the painting, away from the figures, the colors gradually change from a light purple mixed with pink to a darker and more saturated purple. The blending is not smooth. It's heavy and thick, like a cutout of colors.
The painting seems to be representing the love and guidance of a mother to her daughter. Pam Harvey started losing her sight after enduring years of an abusive relationship. Purple is the color of domestic violence. That's why Debord uses so much of it throughout the composition. Harvey is a survivor. In 2014, she chose to tell her story to the world so that she could heal personally and be an inspiration to her own girls and other women around the world overcoming domestic violence.
