Women's Association for the Betterment of Public Schoolhouses

The Women's Association for the Betterment of Public Schoolhouses (WABPS) was formed in 1902 at the State Normal and Industrial College (now UNC Greensboro). The association was created with the support of Dr. Charles McIver, the college's first president, and North Carolina governor, Charles Aycock. The WABPS was organized by women of the State Normal and Industrial College who sought to improve the conditions of public schools across the state. From 1902 through 1915, the women of the WABPS mounted one of the state's most successful and comprehensive education reform campaigns.
