Description

Dear Mr. President,
Will there ever be a day when Americans know the names of poets the way they know the names of sports stars?
My favorite poem is by John Ashbery and it's composed of movie titles. It's called ""They knew what they wanted."" Here are the first two stanzas: They all kissed the bride. They all laughed. They came from beyond space. They came by night.
They came to a city. They came to blow up America. They came to rob Las Vegas. They dare not love.
To me, this poem encapsulates American culture and values as well as a critique. Hope you feel the same.
Sincerely,
Genevieve Waller
