No Longer Yours:
Aspects of Slavery and Freedom Seeking in North Carolina

North Carolina Freedom Seekers from Salisbury, NC in Northern Vermont being pursued

"Therefore it becomes my duty to inform you, that a gentlemen is here from Salisbury, North Carolina by the name of Wheeler, endeavoring to employ some officer to proceed to the northern part of Vermont, and arrest the runaway slaves, by the names of Henry, George, and Agustus Trotter; he says they formerly belonged to Mr. Pope, of Salisbury, North Carolina. On his moving to Virginia, they run away-that they are now his property. And he offers large inducements to those who love money better than liberty, to have them arrested. He says that they may be in Montreal; he has a plan to induce them to come into the States, and then arrest them and take them back into perpetual bondage."
