Partial Transcript: ...I mean, everyone wanted to learn to fly, but it was expensive to get your time in. So we formed the Minneapolis Flying Club, eleven boys and me...

Segment Synopsis: During her time in college, Mrs. Lyle and a group of students formed the Minneapolis Flying Club. This was a way for students to get hours in for flying to receive their commercial licenses because it was expensive at the time.

Partial Transcript: Is that when you first started thinking about flying for the war effort, or how did you get involved with the WASP [Women Airforce Service Pilots]?

Segment Synopsis: After graduating from college, Mrs. Lyle was thinking of joining the service. She was initially turned down by the WASPs, but she later met with Jacqueline Cochran the founder of the WASPs.

Alright, they sent—I think there were eleven of us; nine; I don’t remember exactly—to Dodge City [Army Airfield], Kansas, which was a transition to the B-26...

Segment Synopsis: Mrs. Lyle's final flight during her service in the WASPs was in Gowen Field in Idaho. She reflects on the time she suffered a terrible accident while stationed there.

Segment Synopsis: When she was fully recovered from her injury, the WASPs was disbanded. Mrs. Lyle returned to Minneapolis and became a flight instructor.

Partial Transcript: What was your favorite part about being in the WASP?

Segment Synopsis: Mrs. Lyle reflects on her time served in the WASPs. She loved the uniforms they got to wear in addition to the classes and her fellow classmates. She remembers one song that was written during that time and sings it- "Zoot Suits and Parachutes."

Partial Transcript: So anyway, my father relayed the message to me...and he wanted me to go up there and start this flying school...

Segment Synopsis: Mrs. Lyle's father had a friend who bought an airport on the Canadian border and was thinking of turning it into a flight school. The friend has heard about Mrs. Lyle's time with the WASPs during the war and wondered if she would start this flight school for him- she agreed!
