Joey Martin found a way to elegantly translate Vickie Burke's life experiences into the first two paintings he did. The first two paintings focused on the mood or feelings experienced by Burke when visiting the beach with her children. It showed touch and guidance, people playing in the ocean or building braille letters from the sand. Martin used soft pastel colors, almost like the feeling of soft downy feathers brushing your hand, creating a sense of serenity and beauty in the small moments of life. The third rendition of the painting has a vibrant color palette associated with change, living matter, and traveling, but with one huge difference. It replaced the soft scene of one person getting another. There is now a large glaring map of the world with pins showing the location of places. The global map, but particularly the pins scaled to human size, takes away from the overall feeling of trust and joyfulness that was in the original two versions, and also removes the focus off the more intriguing, lower two thirds of the painting. The lower half of the third paintings still retains the soft joy of the ocean, but I find the variety of bright colors needed to be limited down to three or four with more of a focus on texture, to create a more unified painting.
