Jo Williams (00:00):
Artist Joey Martin sat down with Industries of the Blind employee, Vickie Burke, talking about her life experiences as a blind African-American woman in North Carolina. Martin gave insight into Burke's life from the stories of spending time on the beach with her children and interactions with people who are afraid to ask questions about being blind. One story inspired Martin. It was Burke's children who led her along the beach. As they walked listening to the sound of waves and children playing, some children would ask her if she could see, and she would say no, but encourage people to ask questions, become curious about the different ways of living and to learn, to not be afraid to ask questions. Joey explored ideas of hands touching and sewing, sound waves, ripples in the air, and the feeling of braille letters, and the beach, before discovering that ocean ripples and sound waves appear the same physically.

Jo Williams (00:57):
This led him to start working with people on the beach and traveling, led by Vickie's memories of the time spent with her kids. Originally, he was working in stark, blacks and whites exploring various compositions. Finally discovering the composition of a world map in the background with people standing on the beach. He started working with various colors and textures associated with the beach, making sure there were warmer tones, ending with a plane break, which is a way of showing another side of an object, which showed a vertical perspective of people building braille letters in the sand, spelling, the word community. Martin found the discovery of sensory exploration to be quite challenging and went to talk with Vickie more about her associations with objects that are certain colors, but she associates with a certain feeling or texture. Joey found a way to incorporate Burke's physical textual connections to objects into visual colors without losing the emotions behind them.
