Elliott Voorhees (00:01):
McCarthy's painting works within an abstract style, which seems to deconstruct and reassemble the anatomy of a window, making it almost unfamiliar. For viewers who are not differently sighted, this creates an image which is difficult to decipher, giving some insight into the difficulties that differently sighted individuals encounter when viewing and interacting with the world. Because of this abstract style, the painting works intimately with line and color in order to convey its content and message. McCarthy said she wanted the work to have an openness and warmth, the same warmth that she felt when working with McEachean and the entire community at Industries of the Blind. McCarthy executed this idea through the use of yellow oil paint, which gives a rich, vibrant tone, like warm sunlight streaming through a window.
