[audio description of painting/textile relationship (A.4)]

Transcription

Elliott Voorhees (00:02):
McCarthy developed her painting around the concept of textiles in order to achieve a work which could appeal to both sight and touch while also connecting the work to LaToya McEachean, her partner for this project. McEachean Is Nigerian and has a love for patterns, so McCarthy looked closely at the bold stripes, geometric patterns, and bright colors in Nigerian fabrics in order to develop the concept for her painting. The focus on textiles also references McEachean's work at Industries of the Blind, where she creates uniforms for the U.S. Military. Through the development of the painting, McCarthy ultimately decided on constructing the work like a collage, creating multiple layers of papers and oil paint.

Elliott Voorhees (00:59):
This method gives a topography to the painting, creating ridges corners and textures for the viewer to explore. In her conversations with McEachean about Industries of the Blind, the concept of opportunity continued to come up. This became one of the major inspirations for her decision to make the image of a window the focal point of her painting. McCarthy stated that this is a window of opportunity, but also a window into the community of people who are differently sighted.
