Madisson Yarnell (00:01):
Hannah McCarthy, the artist of this painting worked with Industries of the Blind employee, LaToya McEachean to create an image that represents opportunity and community. LaToya became partially blind, meaning she can see up close and make out general shapes and shadows at the age of 27, which sent her into a period of transition. She accidentally discovered Industries of the Blind through a mistaken phone call, but it turned into an incredible opportunity for her and gave her purpose, mobility, agency, and a strong community of people just like her. Hannah took her inspiring story and came up with the idea of a window to represent openness, opportunity, and new life, a glimpse of what LaToya represents. Hannah wished to create a sense of glowing light and transparency through the style she knows best: abstraction. She began creating images of a window filled with textile patterns from Nigerian descent and images of nature to create a sense of growth.
Madisson Yarnell (01:00):
Hannah did a lot of research on African and Nigerian textiles for ideas because it represents LaToya's heritage and family values. Her final image offers a very bold colored window scene created through oil paint and collaging to give a sense of physicality, which holds importance to those who are blind. Hannah and LaToya had a strong connection at first as her dad went through a period of transition after being diagnosed as disabled and losing his ability to do day to day activities. She used her personal experience through that to create a striking painting that represents the light at the end of the tunnel.
