Death Mask of Charles Duncan McIver

Charles Duncan McIver (1860-1906) was one of the chief advocates for the founding of what would become the State Normal and Industrial School (now UNCG). In 1891, he was appointed the institution’s first president. Fifteen years later, on the morning of September 17, 1906, McIver passed away at the age of 45.

Well L. Brewer, a prominent Greensboro architect, designer, and sculptor, was commissioned to create a death mask of McIver immediately following his death. Soon after, alumni, faculty, and friends of McIver formed a committee to design a memorial statue. In 1909, Brewer sent the death mask to Frederick Willington Ruckstuhl, who the committee commissioned to create the statue. Two copies of the statue were made, with one placed on campus (now in front of Jackson Library) and the other placed on Capital Square in Raleigh.
