Literary Society Signs from Students’ Building

Beginning in 1893, State Normal created two Literary Societies – the Adelphian and the Cornelian. All students were inducted into on Society or the other, determined randomly. These groups hosted many campus events, including plays, debates, socials, and dances. Due to growth in the student population, two additional societies were later added (the Dikeans in 1918 and the Alethians 1923).

The idea to create the Societies came after a group of students were caught creating their own private sorority. President Charles McIver had outlawed such selective groups on campus, feeling that they created an environment where certain students would be excluded. However, he could see that many on campus wanted a sorority-like organization, so he charged two students to create these sorority-like groups that included everyone.

The Students’ Building served as the home base for the Literary Societies and many of their events. The cornerstone of the Students’ Building was laid in 1902. Contributions from students, faculty, and visiting speakers allowed the completion of the three-story structure in 1906. It housed the Domestic Science and Manual Training departments, the campus post office and bookstore, a banquet hall, and a 700-seat auditorium. The building was razed in 1950, but the cornerstone remains visible on College Avenue, in front of the Elliott University Center.
